On Saturday, August 25, 2012, I was invited to participate as a judge for The Face of Hiruscar 2013 and the Semifinal Runway Competition. The event was held at City Mall’s Legend Cinema, and the movie theatre was turned into a fashion show runway.
As this year’s Ambassador for Cambodia Fashion Week, which will be held December 5-8, 2012, in Phnom Penh, this is one of many events leading to the anticipated 2nd annual international fashion show in the country.
The Semifinal Runway Competition was also a second event for most of the judges to reunite, which included; Khmer celebrity singers, Nop Bayyareth and Chhet Sovanpanha, Tito Inn, Director for Raksmey Hang Meas Production, Khemera Ngy, Director of Nova Club, Marjorie Bernard, Cambodia Fashion Week’s Director, International Media Relations, and Dah Lee, Co-Owner of Edge Management Group, the production company for Cambodia Fashion Week.
On July 28th, 2012, 80 of the 150 finalists were chosen to walk in front of a panel of 10 judges, and from then, we selected 50 finalists to compete in the semifinal competition. In this competition,10 finalists were chosen to participate in the Finals, where only one winner will be chosen via online and public voting as the Face of Hiruscar 2013, and will secure a one year contract with Hiruscar & DKSH, a trip to Singapore, a spread with a top magazine, and cash.
During the competition, the host read off the incorrect numbers for the models, and we, as judges, were confused, as we were scoring the models with the incorrect numbers. We tried to stop the competition, and it was stopped, and started over, but it was too little too late. The tabulation of the scores were mixed up, and the end result, a few of the judges were not happy with the top 10 finalists, especially for the men, and we had to re-vote. We ended up choosing a total of 20 finalists, added an extra 10, for next month’s Finale. All this happened in the back room where the models, their families and friends were. Despite this incident, it was a great fashion show and competition.

Cambodia Fashion Week (CFW) will help develop the Cambodia fashion industry by cultivating design talent, stimulating local and international awareness of Cambodian creativity and showcasing the craftsmanship in the international arena. CFW is also focused on positioning Cambodia as a fashion gateway to Indochina for international buyers and media. Apart from providing business opportunities and a platform for Cambodia label and fashion industry, CFW also aims to promote closer collaboration amongst Indochina designers to foster the exchange of ideas.
